More than 900 people -- err, zombies -- have signed up to break the world record number of linked tubers on the French Broad River Saturday morning.
If all of the undead rally, that will mean that Asheville will be the new home of the world record.

The previous record is for about 630.
"There is nothing Asheville likes more than competing with another city for some kind of title or bragging rights.

The zombie part we just threw in there for fun," he added. "The only thing better than trying to break a world record is trying to break a world record while dressed like zombies!"
"We don’t need to keep pursuing these toxic fossil fuels. We have options, and you know we do."

Somerhalder also touted the use of solar energy and encouraged the audience to be more energy-efficient.
"Lets weatherize our homes," he added, "We can build a better, healthier economy based on good-paying, clean-energy jobs."

The initiative of the really was mainly to convince Duke Energy to retire its coal-fired power plant in Asheville; something that may or may not happen. But, it accomplished plenty by featuring a hot star like Somerhalder to influence the younger generation to be more aware of energy and environmental causes.

On May 11, 2013 (Mother’s Day Weekend) it’s expected that over 1,000 runners and walkers will once again participate in this exciting race. The 3rd annual “Ramble Run at Biltmore Park” will offer both 12K and 5K races organized by the Asheville Track Club and presented by Mission Health.

Starting and finishing at Biltmore Park® Town Square and running through The Ramble® Biltmore Forest, both races are scenic and enjoyable, yet challenging. They follow a course that one runner compared to “running on the Blue Ridge Parkway without the cars.”

Runners will follow Schenck Parkway in Biltmore Park through The Ramble’s south gate to the 5K turnaround at Overlook Park. The 12K course continues through The Ramble past Longmeadow Park, along the paved Dingle Creek trail, over Bow Bridge and back to Biltmore Park Town Square. See the course map.

A fitness expo, healthy food from Earth Fare, music and other post race festivities await participants and their families at the finish. Whether you’ve been racing in the Asheville area for years or are brand new to running, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

New for 2013: In addition to Mother/Child teams, cash prizes, free childcare, kids fun run, and fabulous pre/post race festivities, the Ramble Run is adding a school fundraising component. All public and private schools in Buncombe County may participate in Zip’s School Challenge. The schools with the most participants (teachers, students, aunts, uncles, grandparents) per school enrollment are eligible to win cash prizes! WOW! I'm in! This is the most unique "ski resort" you'll ever visit. Come for the music and spend a week here visiting Beech Mtn's Land of Oz extravaganze, Festival of Gnarnia. When it's over, head to Valle Crucis for a visit to the Mast General Store. Stop at one of the local spots in Blowing Rock for lunch that seats you outside to enjoy the view.Sudeaux Luxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17083310421645018042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10692211.post-15282996522041655592012-02-13T14:40:00.002-05:002012-02-13T17:58:43.168-05:00Greenpeace in Asheville Today

North Carolina Coal Ash Ponds, a photo by Greenpeace USA 2012 on Flickr.

Greenpeace on Long Shoals Rd in Asheville right now.

Activists have secured themselves to the coal loader and conveyers, which will prevent coal from entering the facility.

h/t to Michael Jordan, aka DudeinAvlSudeaux Luxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17083310421645018042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10692211.post-26606520914296076782012-02-05T12:09:00.004-05:002012-02-05T12:24:08.858-05:00Asheville Mardi Gras Parade<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 261px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i_RixFM5NyE/Ty66pYQlsoI/AAAAAAAAF08/AZkywLmmJiE/s400/2011QnKs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705702997974430338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f7U7M5Ew6g4/Ty66pdoQGCI/AAAAAAAAF1I/WGGhpsfmaUo/s400/mardigras.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705702999415855138" />
(Photos taken from http://www.ashevillemardigras.org)

Sunday, February 19, 2012 | 2:00pm until 10:00pm

Come one and all to the most fabulous funky glittery parade to hit the streets of Asheville!

Asheville Mardi Gras is an all volunteer community based organization made up of New Orleans ex-pats, aficionados of that culture, and — okay, some folks who just LOVE a good party!

Feel free to put together your own Krewe if you would like to participate.

See the Krewes Page for details!

LinkSudeaux Luxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17083310421645018042noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10692211.post-7118446508050986522012-01-30T12:17:00.004-05:002012-01-30T12:22:35.937-05:00Valentine "Let Your Love Roll" Ride

Your total body Gigglegasm for Valentines Day!

LaZoom's "Let Your Love Roll" Ride is the absolute finest way to tell your sweety that he/she/he-she/she-he is "worth it." Coffee shops have often been associated with poets, activists, college students and any artistic type looking for a caffeinated connection. And, given that the patron saint of Firestorm is writer and feminist Voltairine de Cleyre, this stereotype fits perfectly with this café in Asheville, NC, and not in a bad way. The cafe opened in 2005 with the goal to be worker-owned, and for the past six years, they have achieved that goal while also using Counter Culture Coffee to make a mean cup of joe.

Asheville is a richly spiritual and metaphysical place, maybe because it's surrounded by mountains enjoying heavenly views, and angelic cloud forms, or it could be the huge amount of non-coherent quartz crystal in the ground (trillions of tons!)

It is claimed that this area has more geological vortexes than anywhere in America...or maybe, as legend says, it's the energy that the Atlantian and Lemurian scientists implanted here after their civilization fell into the sea! There are even rumors that the Cherokee (with their blue eyes) were Atlantians. Now called, “The Indie of Asheville,” this community publication that plied the streets and back-alleys and lounged at indie cafes and stores of Asheville for 7 seven years, will be back in August—alongside a rejuvenated Traveling Bonfires. We had a two-year sojourn in Los Angeles and another two years of “hiatus” in the mountains of Candler—but we are BACK, for sure! Lots of famous people visit with us. From what I've gathered through the years, they can keep their privacy quite well here.

Asheville, NC, is one of the world's best kept secret spots where visitors exclaim soon after they come here that they're moving here permanently as soon as they can make it happen.

We are a big blue dot surrounded by a red state and we have almost a communal vibe with all the friendly musicians, street performers, concerts, protests and other fun gatherings. We're also very gay-friendly.

Drive towards downtown, park your car, get out and mingle to the sights, scents, and sounds of Asheville, Johnny. I'll be looking out for ya!
Asheville's Mardi Gras celebration is rapidly growing as more and more sparkles, feathers, and beads show up each year to march in our annual parade. The parade, led by this year's King and Queen, will be full of dancers, roller skaters, drummers and krewe's of colorful characters. The parade will line up in Pack's Square, NOT Walnut Street at 2:00 pm and will step off at 3:00 pm sharp, RAIN OR SHINE. We will then dance and march our way towards Walnut St, then to Lexington Ave, making a left on to Lexington, and then a right on to College St. Next, the parade will loop around Pritchard Park and up Patton Avenue to Pack Square. This is where the parade ends and the Mardi Gras Ball begins.

Interested in being a part of the parade? Gather your krewe of friends, family, classmates or co-workers or just yourself and come be a part of this great event. Feel free to get creative! Art cars and homemade floats are always welcome. Please register them on the Asheville Mardi Gras Facebook groups page. Remember that Asheville's Mardi Gras is a family friendly event and is “Homegrown, Fancy and Free”. Another great way to enjoy this event is to gather your friends and family, pull up a chair, sit back and watch the show! Bring a camera and be ready to catch beads.

After the parade is over around 4:00 pm, continue the fun and revelry at the Mardi Gras Ball in Pack's Tavern's elegant Century Room. Costumes are not required to enter the ball. This is a free event for the entire community to enjoy. There will be festive libations and extraordinary live music performed by Sirius B to keep us dancing all night long. For more information on the Parade or Ball, and for Mardi Gras events leading up to the parade day, check in with the groups page on Facebook under Asheville Mardi Gras.

Link

Grand Krewe at the Parade
Sunday at 12:00pm
Pack Square, Vance Monument/fountain areaSudeaux Luxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17083310421645018042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10692211.post-89522914101108182842011-02-10T17:31:00.001-05:002011-02-10T17:48:07.488-05:00Bike Love PartyAsheville on Bikes is proud to announce the 5th Annual Bike Love Party and Fundraiser, happening Saturday February 26th at the new downtown Arcade Asheville.
