The Village Witch

Byron Ballard is a local writer, urban farmer and Buncombe county native who writes about traditional Appalachian witching and modern Earth religions. She holds a BA from UNCA, a Master of Fine Arts from Trinity University and lives in historic West End of Asheville, NC with her husband, daughter, four cats and a demanding garden. This blog is the place to come to find out what’s happening in the local Earth religions community, to learn about mountain cures and charms and to ask questions about which witch is which.

TIME FOR OUR POWER

Welcome to the inaugural Time for Our Power! "Women Bringing Change to the World" Conference, which will be held in Asheville, North Carolina.

JUNE 20 - 22, 2008

The purpose of this 3-day event is to provide a forum for women of all ages, and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to gather, learn, grow and become inspired to personally and collectively bring powerful, positive and much needed change to their own lives and to the world.

Time for Our Power! will feature speakers, panelists and workshop leaders from a wide variety of fields: environmental, political, international affairs, business, medical, spiritual, personal growth and the arts.

So many amazing performers and speakers that will be at the event so let me leave you with a few names.

Activist/Artist 'Zine and Blog Workshop

Grrly Show by filmmaker Kara Herold is an 18-minute film about the feminist 'zine explosion of the 1990s.

Lori Horvitz, Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Women's Studies at UNC-Asheville, will discuss what evolved out this richly independent feminist media and the way blogs have erupted.

The event will include hands-on workshops with local artists in 'zine-making, blogging, screen printing and knitting in the spirit of Do-It-Yourself culture.

This event is being held in conjunction with the smArt Speak: Distinguished Artist Series.

Woman's Ayahuasca Journey

The House of La Matrona, Holistic Midwifery and Doula Workshop in Asheville, NC, is offering a Woman's Ayahuasca Journey into the Peruvian Amazon - Nov 6-14, 2007.

We will gather in Peru for our annual Ayahuasca Journey. We meet in Iquitos, in the Amazon basin, and from there we travel upriver into the jungle. Under the tutelage of Juan Paimos, we will make the ayahuasca brew and have the opportunity to partake of this plant spirit medicine three times during our stay. Cost is $799 + airfare, and includes lodging and most meals, travel on the Amazon, Plant Spirit Medicine, fees for portage in the jungle, plus stipends for teachers, cooks and helpers...basically everything you will need in Peru.
