    Activist Clare Hanrahan

Activist Clare Hanrahan may leave the front lines, but her voice still rings out - by Jason Sandford, Citizen-Times

In her younger days, she marched with garbage workers in Memphis, Tenn., in the wake of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

She has shaken her fist at the front gates of bomb-making factories. She has chanted with immigrants demanding fair treatment. She has stood silent vigil with women advocating for an end to war.

And she once trespassed on the grounds of the Fort Benning, Ga., military base, home to a military training school commonly known as the School of the Americas — an offense for which she spent six months in federal prison in 2002.

“At one point in my life, I thought if I screamed loud enough and worked hard enough and was unrelenting in my kind of advocating and demanding, I could make change,” Hanrahan said.

"Rethink Afghanistan" movie on August 27th

    Film & Discussion — Free
    Thursday, August 27, 2009 7-9PM
North Asheville Library, 1030 Merrimon Ave.

Since the October 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. has spent almost
$225 billion and coalition forces have lost more than 1300 troops. In just
the first six months of 2009, we killed more than 1,000 civilians. There
    is no end in sight.

Why are we still there? Are the people of Afghanistan any better off? Have
women’s rights improved? Is the government stable? Are there better ways
to spend our tax dollars? Is our military presence effective?

    Carnegie Endowment's Gilles Dorronsoro says:
"The mere presence of foreign soldiers fighting a war in Afghanistan is
probably the single most important factor in the Taliban's resurgence."

    What do you say?

Join Veterans For Peace for a screening and discussion of Brave New Films’
    documentary, “Rethink Afghanistan” (http://rethinkafghanistan.com/). This
full-length documentary about America’s escalating military involvement in
the country provides expert opinions as well as troubling images as it
answers many questions and raises others.

    Center of Unlimited Possibilities

The goal of C.U.P. is to enable members to achieve their highest potential on all levels of being; the physical, mental, intuitive, and spiritual. It is in this attainment that one secures the deepest and most all-embracing sense of peace and harmony with self and all of creation. We believe that at the highest level of human potential, miracles become ordinary. The center is a place of inspiration and support of evolutionary achievements. An empowered space where new boundries, paradigms, and beliefs are created. The time for a major shift has arrived and all are invited to participate.

Today C.U.P. is in the early stages of creation. We have found a central Asheville location for preliminary core member meetings to prepare for a Grand Opening in the Spring of 2006. These meetings will be every other Wednesday from 6:30-9pm starting February and onward. This is the time to get involved and assist in creating the most inspirational gathering center ever. All input will be welcome. Every Wednesday's meeting will also have an "all you can eat" vegetarian dinner.

    The Artwork of John Lennon

In between transatlantic trips last week, Yoko Ono talked to Xpress about When I'm Sixty-Four: The Artwork of John Lennon will make a three-day stop at the Haywood Park Hotel in Asheville, NC.

His drawings are about peace, love and family. But the late singer's works – though not executed on gessoed canvases – are far from uninformed. In fact, before the former Beatle was a musician, he was an art student.
