Asheville Indymedia

Asheville Indymedia has just gone global this week and it's really off to a respectable beginning. The time is overdue for Asheville to have a global voice, (of which there are over 170 autonomous local collectives all around the world) and this is one way to do that.

Anyone can post news to the AIMC website, including text, photos, audio, and video. News appears on the open publishing newswire on the right side of the website. The AIMC editorial working group decides what news is important and pressing enough to deserve to be featured in the center-column and what news needs to be hidden or deleted, all the while keeping the Editorial Guidelines in mind, which are posted on the website and decided on democratically by the AIMC collective.

Asheville Indymedia is truly independent. No corporation owns AIMC, no government manages the organization, no single donor finances the project. AIMC is not the mouthpiece of any political party or organization. People involved with Indymedia have a wide variety of political and personal viewpoints.

Crop Circles in Asheville?

Asheville resident Danny Tetrault sent in this photo of what he called a crop circle he saw in West Asheville on Sunday, May 27.

It's not very intricate looking enough to be authentic. And then there's the whole track thing leading up to it but it's been fun to imagine "what if".

Clowns defeat Nazis!

A white power march in Knoxville, TN, composed of Klansmen and Nazis met serious (sic) resistance from a group of organized clowns. Or Klowns. Here's about how it went:

"White Power!" the Nazi's shouted, "White Flour?" the clowns yelled back running in circles throwing flour in the air and raising separate letters which spelled "White Flour".

"White Power!" the Nazi’s angrily shouted once more, "White flowers?" the clowns cheers and threw white flowers in the air and danced about merrily.

"White Power!" the Nazi’s tried once again in a doomed and somewhat funny attempt to clarify their message, "ohhhhhh!" the clowns yelled "Tight Shower!" and held a solar shower in the air and all tried to crowd under to get clean as per the Klan’s directions.

At this point several of the Nazi’s and Klan members began clutching their hearts as if they were about to have a heart attack. Their beady eyes bulged, and the veins in their tiny narrow foreheads beat in rage. One last time they screamed "White Power!"

The clown women thought they finally understood what the Klan was trying to say. "Ohhhhh…" the women clowns said. "Now we understand…", "WIFE POWER!" they lifted the letters up in the air, grabbed the nearest male clowns and lifted them in their arms and ran about merrily chanting "WIFE POWER! WIFE POWER! WIFE POWER!"

Asheville Based Film to be Released Wide-ish

"For Catherine," the first feature film from Asheville writer/director Ethan Hunter, will be available on Netflix and in stores on Tuesday, May 22, 2007.

Inspired by his bedeviled relationship with a young lady named, "Catherine," Hunter wrote the screenplay while still an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina Asheville, and he and his cast and crew would spend the next four years bringing to life this brutally funny, unflinchingly honest and ultra low-budget look at character and love in the twenty-first century.

Beginning with a satirical stab at the unbearable Hollywood Romantic Comedy paradigm, "For Catherine" quickly dispenses with the clichés of so many terrible films before flashing forward to show the viewer what happens after the leads in the Romantic Comedy walk off together into the sunset. Two years later we witness the young Duo Black (Grant "Stemage" Henry of Metroid Metal fame) feeling so suffocated by his life and so desperate for solitude that he Fed Ex’s everything he owns to himself. We watch as his friends and the delivery guy try to help him reclaim his life along with his belongings.

This uniquely sincere comedy, produced for less that the price of a decent used car and filmed entirely in Asheville, NC, has been fortunate enough to gather a devoted fan base and receive several awards, high acclaim and exceptional reviews in dozens of countries on every continent except Antarctica (and we’re working on that to be sure) and on May 22nd will be finally be available on Netflix and in stores everywhere.

Who's Got The Homegrown?

Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force Upcoming Events

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR INFORMATION ABOUT STRIVE NOT TO DRIVE, APRIL 20!

Friday, April 20, is the big day, complete with prizes, promotions, and even breakfast!

Asheville Transit is offering 25-cent bus fare, the film festival will be at UNCA, and there will be prize drawings for folks who register at www.gettingaround-wnc.com and then do something besides drive alone on Friday.

If Friday, the 20th doesn’t work for you, you have until the 29th to register and complete your own strive not to drive day. So far, I know that prizes have been provided by Liberty Bicycles, Asheville Transit, Greenlife Grocery, the Asheville Citizen-Times, Malaprops, the Tweetsie Railroad, Asheville Regional Airport, and Chimney Rock Park. (There are seriously good prizes available.)

The bicycle workshop will be Saturday morning (see below), and on Sunday, April 22, the Beat the Bounds Ride begins at 9 (details available at www.blueridgebicycleclub.org), and then the earth day celebration will begin at 12:30 at the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore Village. HOW TO LEAVE YOU CAR AT HOME – USING YOUR BICYCLE FOR TRANSPORTATION WORKSHOP IS SATURDAY, APRIL 21

This beginning transportation workshop will be from 9-1, with an optional short ride afterward. The workshop is free, but please reserve a space by contacting Claudia Nix. The workshop will include a panel discussion by folks who use their bicycle to get around, and sessions on safety, riding skills, equipment, and route planning. Asheville Transit is bringing a bus so there will be a chance to practice using the bicycle racks. At the end of the workshop, there will be a chance for a short group ride. Michael Sule rightly observed that by sending out news of the workshop to this mailing list, we are "preaching to the choir." He proposes we think of the workshop as a “bring a friend to church” activity. Tell someone you know who isn’t riding in Asheville about the workshop. Bring them if that’s what it takes.
