BLUE RIDGE PRIDE Today!

Blue Ridge Pride festival is happening with lots of entertainment noon-6 p.m. at Pack Square Park. Performers include children’s entertainer 23 Skidoo, Stephanies id, Cantaria, Natalie Smalls Productions and and the Idgies. After the festival, singer CeCe Peniston performs at the Grove House, 11 Grove St.

We'll be taking over Pack Square Park from 12-6 pm on Saturday Oct 1 to celebrate and raise awareness of the diversity of our community. We've got great entertainment, vendors, and community groups all coming in to make this a day you can't miss! Don't forget to check the events page for pre and post festival parties!

Asheville Stonewall Rally!

Sunday July 1st!

Come commemorate the anniversary of the beginning of the contemporary queer movement with us this Sunday at Pritchard Park! June 29th, 1969 gays, lesbians, drag queens, transgenders, and queers of all kinds rioted in the streets for 3 days after a routine raid of the Stonewall Inn, NYC. This resistance was the first of it's kind in the US queer movement and we remember those who fought by celebrating every year in Asheville!

Asheville Fringe Festival

The Asheville Fringe Festival is ready to let it's freak flags fly again. Or so goes the blip on the article. It begins Thursday, January 26, 2006, and runs thru the weekend.

In a city like Asheville, NC, there is uber potential for a balls to the wall, kick out the jams Fringe Festival. Honestly, it hasn't picked up enough steam as I'd hoped. Perhaps they're trying to maintain too much class.

For starters, feature some great drag shows. Is the gay community even involved in it? Calling all talented heatherns, gay and straight. Somebody show them how it's done.

6. The banned-book list at Malaprop's

In addition to titles of gay, lesbian, and transgender interest--and separate sections for graphic novels and local writers and poets--this very independent bookstore has several shelves of books currently banned by schools and libraries around the country. Gone With the Wind, Lord of the Flies, Hamlet, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and a few of the Harry Potter titles are all on someone's no-no list. Several times a week, the bookstore-and-café hosts author readings and live music. The bulletin board where locals post events, jobs, and solicitations is absolutely worth a look. One recent flyer read: 2chix lawn care--support the women's movement. 55 Haywood St., 828/254-6734.

Out In Asheville

Out In Asheville
is a popular monthly newspaper is now online. It's a warm and comprehensive resource for the GLBT community and serves WNC, upstate SC, and the Southeast.

Some of the area nitelife is featured. Listen to jazz by the fireplace in a large comfy chair at or try out the Oxyben bar at Tressa's; visit all three dance floors at Scandals, sing karaoke at Club Hairspray; or visit the oldest gay bar in NC, O'Henry's, where they'll crown Miss Gay Asheville 2006 next month. Lots going on in this town.
